Reflexology is the practise of stimulating specific reflexes in our feet and hands to help the body heal itself from within. These reflex points are believed to mirror the corresponding body part and when stimulated works to release the blockages within.
Reflexology is suitable for all, from babies to the elderly, male and female and is carried out after an initial consultation to determine whether there are any contraindications (reasons) why a treatment could not be carried out.
The right foot corresponds to the right side of the body and the left foot to the left side of the body. Where an organ is only located on one side of the body, such as the heart on the left, the corresponding reflex point is also found on the same side of the body, in this example, on the left.
Reflexology traces back to the ancient Egyptians where in a tomb in Saqqara, Egypt, (named The Physicians Tomb), a wall painting was discovered with two figures giving hand and foot reflexology.
In the 20th century, zone therapy was developed by Dr. Fitzgerald an ear, nose, throat specialist, who charted longitudinal energy lines through the body, and found that he when he tightly applied elastic bands around specific parts of a finger, he could create an anaesthetic effect on patients and was therefore able to perform surgery on the ear, nose and throat without the use of additional anaesthetics.
Reflexology treats the person as a whole, and when a reflex is unbalanced, it may feel sensitive or tender when pressure is applied to it. By working over sensitive reflexes through a number of reflexology treatments the tenderness will usually reduce as the body begins to function properly again as it reaches homeostasis (optimum balance).
I trained at the Central London College of Reflexology (CLCR) with Michael Keet in 2005 and have since taken some advanced workshops with CLCR and Louise Keet. I am also able to offer Advanced techniques, Power Reflexology and to shortly follow Spinal Reflexology.
